Years together: 6 years Origin of band/artist: This New York City-based band is anchored by Irish-born lead singer Michelle Risquet and Carmelo (-- the two met in NYC), who together write most of the songs. Carmelo plays bass, acoustic guitar and synthesizers. Guitarist hugh Ford, drummer/percussionist Joe Ignacio Rodriguez and Ish-Paul Perez on keyboards round out the group. It is Michelle's gentle, seductive and ghostly vocals that give the band its identity, its signature sound -- an eclectic alternative/pop rock type of sound. At first, the overall atmosphere is, well, haunting -- right from the Gothic title design Song Suicidal Poets on the CD. Consider the lyrics: "Scenes from my nightmare, pictures from a coma...where suicidal poets twist...and wrestle with swollen words...I want to pour ink all over you and leave my mark. I want to hear you call me from beyond and lay your icy fingers on my form." (the "icy fingers" part is repeated numerous times) The other tunes are "Just Tell Me Something," which breaks suddenly from the "lifestyles of the strange and eerie" to a more 80's/pop-sounding (dare we say Cyndi Lauper?) song, also worth mentioning what is probably the prettiest melody in "Life is a Mystery" and "I'm the only One," Turning back to the spooky, dark mood with Michelle's best vocal efforts on the CD. Next to "Lay In Grace" which has hit #2 on the all genre weekly global charts here on Besonic. All songs On this Page Have Scored #1 On several Charts Including Soundclick.com wheresthecraic.com and other sites. The Suicidal Poets launched onto the Internet music scene April 1999 and since then it has been an upward spiral of success. Hitting the top spot on soundclick.com in late 1999 and maintaining that spot to date. was just the beginning. In the summer of 2000 they were featured four times on the mp3tv NOW channel as the best band of the ten best websites in the world. Since then, they have been featured on numerous Internet radio stations and are currently getting airplay worldwide. Currently Suicidal Poets are ranked #1 in the rock, pop and alternative charts in approximately twelve different countries including U.S.A, U.K, Canada, France and Ireland. The band has being featured as the #1 hottest undiscovered rock band on the mtvundiscovered siteand stay in the chart of charts for about 4 month. The band has been included on several compilation c.d's including the highly acclaimed compilation c.d with artists such as Brad Pitt among others. Their unique eclectic style of music which ranges from pop, rock to gothic folk led by lead singer Michelle and Carmelo who write most of the music has even caught the attention of major producers like Lewis A Martinee who produced artists such as Vanessa Williams, Enrique Iglesias and The Pet Shop Boys to name a few.
