You Must Stand Out!

Remember we were just talking about the problems with online music “warehouses” and how placing your music in one of these warehouses was a sure fire way to NOT be heard? Well, let us explain why this happens…you probably know some of the answers already, but please bare with us...

  1. You’re Just a Name: Your name is important (after all, how else can you introduce yourself to someone), but to the average listener your name alone means very little. If a listener is unfamiliar with a band, a band’s name, by itself, will do little to spark a listener’s curiosity.

  2. Poorly Sorted: On many sites, when you sign up and submit music, you are placed on a list that likely includes dozens, or even hundreds, of other bands. This list is usually in alphabetical order…so if your name starts with “T” you’re way, way, down near the bottom. If you’re lucky, the list is based on a specific genre, but that’s about as in depth as the list gets. The result is what we call List Syndrome…you end up being a name in a long list that is distinguished by next to nothing of interest.

  3. Lack of Relevant Information: Let’s say you’re on a list that attributes a specific genre to your band and music. Ok, at least people will know what kind of music you play, but what else do they know about you? Very little! Sure, they can click on your name and possibly find out a little more about you, but why would they…after all, there’s nothing about your name on this dull list to make you stand out. No mention of your influences, style, goals, origins, song titles, etc. List Syndrome strikes again! NO ONE KNOWS YOU ACCEPT THE PEOPLE THAT ALREADY KNOW YOU!

  4. Listener Impatience: The problems we list above all culminate to this specific problem. Listeners interested in Independent music are looking to explore…but only up to a point! Think about it. If you’re looking for some music to listen to, and are presented with long list of names, are you going to click on every one? For that matter, are you even going to look beyond the bands whose names start with the letter "C"? Probably not.

You need to grab people’s attention right away, and/or make it easy for them to find you! The more people that find you, the more likely you are to increase your audience and sell CDs and other products of your own.
And that’s where we come in!

Before approaching any webmaster for a link exchange, check and see if you have at least 10-20 quality links pointing to your website. So, a link exchange, could boost search engine rankings for both parties, and improve page rank. This is why a webmaster will not approve a link exchange request, until you have at least 10-20 inbound links and a few good posts or articles.
